The traditional Tiv marriage system in which a groom's family pays a symbolic bride price and fulfills customary marriage requirements.

🌐 English

Bride-Price Marriage is the traditional Tiv marriage system that gradually replaced Yamshe (Exchange Marriage). Instead of exchanging sisters, the groom's family fulfills customary marriage requirements by presenting gifts and a symbolic bride price to the bride's family. The marriage process begins with family introductions, followed by negotiations between both families. Elders play an important role in discussing marriage requirements, confirming the suitability of the couple, and blessing the union. The groom's family presents the agreed items, which may include money, livestock, drinks, clothing, and other customary gifts. Once these requirements are fulfilled, the marriage is formally recognized. The wedding celebration features traditional music, dancing, prayers, and communal feasting. The bride is usually dressed in traditional Tiv attire made from A'nger cloth and adorned with beads and cultural ornaments. Today, many Tiv families combine Kem Kwase with church or civil wedding ceremonies while preserving the cultural values of family unity, respect for elders, and community participation.
