John Mark Inienger

Major General John Mark Inienger was a Nigerian Army officer who served as ECOMOG Field Commander in Liberia from December 1993 to August 1996, during the First Liberian Civil War, and earlier as Military Governor of Bendel State from 1985 to 1987.

Inienger was born on 16 April 1945 at Mbaduku, Vandeikya Local Government Area, Benue State.

As a Lieutenant Colonel, Inienger was instrumental in the coup that brought General Ibrahim Babangida to power in August 1985, and was subsequently appointed Military Governor of Bendel State, a position he held until 1987. He also served as Commander of the Brigade of Guards.

Inienger served as ECOMOG Field Commander in Liberia from December 1993 to August 1996, during a chaotic period of the First Liberian Civil War marked by warring factions contesting territory; by April 1996, his troops were hard-pressed to maintain control in Monrovia against militiamen engaged in widespread looting. After returning from Liberia in 1996, he was appointed Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji.

Served as Military Governor of Bendel State. Commanded ECOMOG peacekeeping forces in Liberia during a critical phase of the First Liberian Civil War. Later served as Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji.

As a key figure in the 1985 coup and later as ECOMOG Field Commander during one of the most turbulent periods of the Liberian civil war, Inienger held two of the most consequential military commands of his era in Nigerian and West African history.
