James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, Tor Tiv V, is a Nigerian academic and the fifth and incumbent Tor Tiv, the Paramount Ruler of the Tiv people, President of the Tiv Area Traditional Council, and Chairman of the Benue State Council of Chiefs. A professor of biochemistry, he previously served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and as the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, before succeeding Alfred Akawe Torkula, Tor Tiv IV. He is the first Tiv man to have served as vice chancellor of a Nigerian federal university, and the first to rule as Tor Tiv while holding the title of professor.
James Ayatse was born on 12 May 1956 to Iorzua Ayatse and Adeior Iorzua in Mbakaan, Shangev-Ya, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. He received his elementary education at LGEA School, Orbiam, Ikov, Ushongo Local Government Area, LGEA School, Mbagbegba, Shangev-Ya, and St Anne's Primary School, Adikpo, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. He later obtained a West African School Certificate (WASC), Division One, at Government Secondary School, Gboko.
Ayatse earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at the University of Ibadan, followed by a Master of Science at the University of Calabar. He proceeded to the University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom, as a Commonwealth student, where he obtained a doctorate in Biochemistry. He later returned to the University of Calabar for an MBA, and rose to become a professor of Biochemistry in 1993 at the age of 37 - the first Tiv man to attain that rank.
Ayatse began his academic career in 1980 as a graduate assistant at the University of Calabar, progressing to professor of Biochemistry in 1993. Over a teaching career spanning more than 35 years, he taught at the University of Calabar, University of Uyo, Benue State University, Makurdi, the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, the University of Abuja, and the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, teaching biochemistry, business management, and public administration. He served as an external assessor and external examiner for numerous Nigerian universities, chaired National Universities Commission committees on performance indicators and science-programme accreditation, and served on several governing boards at state, national, and international levels.
In 2001, he was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, succeeding Erastus Gyang, a position he held until 2006. He grew the student population from about 2,000 to about 7,000 during his tenure, and was noted for resolving student and staff union disputes peacefully. In 2011, he was appointed pioneer Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, one of nine federal universities established under President Goodluck Jonathan's administration, a role he held until 2016. He became the first vice chancellor among those nine universities to graduate students and mobilize them for the National Youth Service Corps, and oversaw the university's rise to 14th-best in Nigeria in the Webometrics rankings by 2015-16. Since 2019, he has served as Chancellor of Abia State University.
Following the death of Alfred Akawe Torkula, Tor Tiv IV, James Ayatse was elected as Tor Tiv V on 20 December 2016, polling 39 of 46 votes against three other contestants - Daniel Saror, a former vice chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (3 votes); Benedict Shinku (3 votes); and Andrew Wombo (1 vote). He was crowned Tor Tiv V on 4 March 2017 at a ceremony in Gboko presided over by the Kingmakers of the Tiv Supreme Council (Ijir Tamen), and was presented with the Staff of Office by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State. President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated him on his emergence, describing it as an affirmation of his strength of character, integrity, and moral authority earned over years as a lecturer, scholar, and administrator.
Unlike his predecessor, who swore his oath of office on the ancestral Swem, Ayatse took his oath on the Christian Bible, becoming only the second Tor Tiv, after Akperan Orshi (Tor Tiv III), to do so.
First Tiv man to serve as vice chancellor of a Nigerian federal university, and the first to serve twice, leading both the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma. First Tiv professor, and the first professor to rule as Tor Tiv. Honoured with the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in October 2022.
As the fifth and incumbent Tor Tiv, Ayatse represents a shift toward academic and administrative leadership within the Tiv traditional institution, being the first professor to hold the office. His election followed a closely contested vote among four candidates and marked continuity in the Tor Tiv stool following the death of Alfred Akawe Torkula.
Ayatse's tenure as Tor Tiv V continues to be defined by his background as an academic administrator, having led two federal universities before his enthronement. His decision to swear his oath of office on the Bible rather than the ancestral Swem reflected a notable departure in Tor Tiv succession tradition.
