NKST Becomes an Autonomous Self-Governing Church

The Tiv church founded by the 1911 Dutch Reformed/Sudan United Mission was formally organized as an autonomous, self-supporting, self-propagating denomination with four Nigerian pastors.

In 1957, the mission church founded at Sai in 1911 became a formally autonomous, self-supporting and self-propagating denomination, ordaining its first four Nigerian pastors and adopting the name Nongo u Kristu u ken Sudan hen Tiv (Church of Christ in the Sudan among the Tiv, NKST). The church later renamed itself the Universal Reformed Christian Church in 2012 while retaining the NKST acronym.

Marked the transition from missionary-led to indigenous Tiv church leadership, three years before Nigerian political independence.
